On May 11, The 2026 Universal Cup Finals reached its closing day. At the closing and award ceremony, Ni Qiaoli, Minister of Huawei's Computing Software Platform Department, delivered closing remarks on behalf of Huawei. He congratulated all contestants and thanked the coaches, experts, technical team, and volunteers for their hard work. By combining algorithmic challenges with real-world technical scenarios, this event showcased the outstanding abilities and innovative spirit of young technology talents. Huawei looks forward to working with exceptional talents worldwide to tackle future technological challenges and create greater value through technology. May all participants keep their passion for exploration and achieve even greater success in their future research and careers!

Afterwards, Universal Cup co-chairs Qingyu Shi and Jingbang Chen took the stage together to introduce the staff, volunteers, and jury team behind the event, and invited everyone to take a group photo. It was their dedication and hard work behind the scenes that supported the smooth running of this high-level onsite Finals.

Next came the most anticipated part of the ceremony: the announcement of the standings. The Challenge results were revealed first, with USA1 from the United States taking first place, followed by Dvoe protiv vetra and Afterlife. Then, Chair Qingyu Shi personally hosted the reveal of the main contest scoreboard. USA1 successfully defended their title and swept both Finals contests this year. The team's three members are Andrew He, Gennady Korotkevich, and Kevin Sun. This team of Silicon Valley AI engineers once again proved its dominance among an exceptionally strong field. The runner-up was Amstelpark, a formidable team composed of three former world champions, while China's Flammable Dumpster claimed third place. Meanwhile, FreakPlus, a solo team formed by high school senior Hengxi Liu, finished fourth and earned a silver medal for the second year in a row, becoming one of the most talked-about stories on this year's Finals scoreboard.

It is also worth noting that this year's Finals received participation and support from coaches and senior community members from universities around the world. Coaches and teachers from the University of Alberta, Peking University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, the University of British Columbia, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Fudan University, the University of Waterloo, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Tsinghua University, City University of Hong Kong, Zhejiang University, and other institutions took part throughout the event and were invited to present awards at the closing ceremony. This also reflects the growing influence of the event within the global competitive programming community.

May 9 | Warm-up, Challenge, and Finals Traditions

LXJ5523

On May 9, contestants welcomed Challenge Day. The day began with the Warm-up Contest. As an important rehearsal before the main contest, it helped contestants further adapt to the competition rhythm and quickly brought the onsite competitive atmosphere up to speed. Next came The 2026 Universal Cup Finals Challenge sponsored by Huawei. Unlike traditional algorithm competitions, this official contest asked contestants to work on a problem drawn from a core industrial challenge, continuously optimize their solutions, and strive for higher scores to climb the leaderboard.

This contest format tested not only contestants' algorithmic abilities, but also their engineering implementation skills. It also created a more direct connection between competition and complex real-world problems, reflecting the increasingly close interaction between algorithm competitions and industry needs.

That evening, one of the traditions of the UCup Finals, the table tennis tournament, was held as scheduled. Twenty-four players from among the contestants and guests competed together, leaving many memorable moments at the tables. It may seem like a relaxed off-contest activity, but it is in fact one of the most precious parts of the UCup onsite Finals: beyond the problems, top contestants, coaches, and guests from around the world truly gather together, interact in another way, get to know one another, and add warmth and memories to the competition beyond the arena itself.

On May 10, the showdown that would determine the final rankings finally arrived. The day began with an entrance ceremony personally hosted by Chair Jingbang Chen, creating an energetic and infectious atmosphere. Under the spotlights and applause, top teams from around the world entered one after another, fully igniting the battle atmosphere of this year's Finals. Afterwards, Chair Qingyu Shi explained the contest rules to all teams, introduced further contest information, and led all jury members onto the stage to officially announce the start of the contest.

The main contest then carried this tension all the way onto the scoreboard. USA1, who eventually swept both championships, did not hold an absolute advantage from the beginning; instead, they were in a relatively unfavorable position early on, but quickly stabilized, fought back, and once again demonstrated the adjustment ability of a top-tier team. Meanwhile, Amstelpark briefly overtook them after the scoreboard was frozen, making the championship highly suspenseful. But USA1 responded swiftly, regained the lead, and ultimately secured the title. The entire contest was full of twists and turns, showing both the razor-thin margins among elite teams and the depth and height of today's global algorithm competition landscape.

May 11 | Academic Talks and Challenge Roadshow

On May 11, this year's Finals hosted academic talks centered on AI and algorithm competitions, bringing thematic sharing and in-depth discussion to the event and giving the gathering even greater relevance to the times. Against the backdrop of rapid AI development, algorithm competitions are no longer only contests in the arena; they are also closely connected with AI research, applications, and innovation. Such discussions made the UCup Finals not only a competition that determines rankings, but also an important platform for exploring future trends in AI and competitive programming.

The Challenge roadshow was also held that day. Contestants went on stage to share their strategies and optimization ideas for the Challenge, and exchanged views with industry experts. This not only allowed everyone to understand the problem again from different perspectives, but also brought the modeling, engineering implementation, and optimization iteration skills in algorithm competitions into direct contact with real-world needs.
